The governing organization for board-certified music therapists in the United States, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), defines music therapy as “The clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program." Resilience & Reverb provides virtual music therapy services to ages 6 and older, including but not limited to those with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), dyslexia, speech and language disorders, developmental disabilities, and medical stress or fatigue. Building trust through the musical relationship of therapist and participant is foundational for music therapy sessions. Common goals include increasing emotional identification and regulation, improving fine and gross motor skills, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, strengthening social skills, and developing augmentative and alternative communication device skills (AAC). Domains assessed include social, emotional, cognitive, communicative, motor, behavioral, and mental health needs. Musical experiences, instruments, and activities are selected based on each client’s strengths, goals, and preferred music. Board-certified music therapy services at Resilience & Reverb are provided by Rebecca McBride, M.M., MT-BC, through HIPAA-compliant virtual platforms. Session notes, referrals, and client information are securely stored within a HIPAA-compliant provider portal.
